Martha Davila

Recipient

My name is Martha. I was born in Columbia and became an American citizen. I came to this country in the 70’s. I have three children. I became very sick from Hepatitis C and Cirrhosis of the Liver. I was in the hospital many times with blood in my GI track due to my liver disease. My family and I were afraid that I was going to die and I was running out of hope. I was put on the waiting list for Liver Transplant at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. I was called in three times for a chance to get a liver and each time the other candidate was chosen.

Finally, on Thanksgiving week, I was called in and selected as the best candidate for the organ that was available. The wonderful staff and doctors at Jackson Memorial Transplant Clinic saved my life. I recovered remarkably according to all the hospital staff that cared for me.

I am grateful for the medical technology in this country and for the Medicaid/Medicare program, which funded my transplant. After some time, I was invited to learn about the donor of my liver. I cried with Alex’s father on the phone. They were happy for me. I only wish to show them my gratitude and offer my friendship. I am grateful to the donor’s family, who gave me a liver. Alex (my donor) is my angel in heaven I am happy for this miracle.
